Pain Pumps Linked to Life-Threatening Injuries
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued the highest level of warning on Medtronic pain pump fills, used to gradually inject drugs into patients undergoing treatment for chronic pain or certain types of cancer. According to warnings, the refilling pumps could administer inadvertent injections of prescribed drugs, resulting in improper dosages.
Investigations carried out by the FDA and the device manufacture Medtronic, Inc, has linked eight deaths and more than 250 serious or life threatening injuries to such errors since May 1996.
