Pain Pumps Linked to Life-Threatening Injuries

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued the highest level of warning on Medtronic pain pump fills, used to gradually inject drugs into patients undergoing treatment for chronic pain or certain types of cancer. According to warnings, the refilling pumps could administer inadvertent injections of prescribed drugs, resulting in improper dosages.

Investigations carried out by the FDA and the device manufacture Medtronic, Inc, has linked eight deaths and more than 250 serious or life threatening injuries to such errors since May 1996. For more than 15 years, Burg Simpson attorneys have been at the forefront of national litigation involving dangerous prescription medicines and defective medical devices, recovering $Billions in dollars for injured individuals and their family members. Truck Safety Standards Under Scrutiny

According to reports, new crash test data and analysis by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has revealed that occupants in automobiles are at risk of serious injury, decapitation and death if the vehicle they are travelling in underrides a heavy-duty trailer or truck.

According to IIHS investigations, frames or “underride guards” fitted to the rear of most trucks simply are not strong enough to keep cars from sliding underneath these vehicles, even at relatively low speeds. In a March 1, 2011 statement, the IIHS said, “Underride makes death or serious injury more likely since the upper part of the passenger vehicle’s occupant compartment typically crushes as the truck body intrudes into the vehicle safety cage.”

Trucking accidents are a serious problem and can give rise to complicated legal claims. In 2009, 70% of the 3,163 people who died in all large truck crashes were occupants of cars or other passenger vehicles. If you, or someone you love, have suffered serious injuries as a result of an accident involving a truck or trailer it is important to talk to an experienced truck-accident attorney as soon as possible.

One-Third of All Injury Deaths linked to Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are among the leading causes of death and permanent disability in the United States. Data published by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) reveals that as many as 1.7 million Americans suffer a traumatic Brian injury each year. Brain injuries are not only caused by direct physical blows to the head, but can also be caused by sudden movement of the brain inside the skull. Automobile accidents, slip and falls and sporting injuries often can lead to some form of TBI.

TBI’s vary in severity and the problems they can cause are diverse. Headaches, memory problems, and changes in mood and personality are common effects of a TBI. More severe brain injuries can cause devastating cognitive changes and physical and mental functional disabilities. According to the CDC, TBIs are a contributing factor in more than a third of all injury-related deaths in the United States. Each year 52,000 people die as a result of sustaining a TBI and more than 270,000 are hospitalized. Anyone who suspects that they may have suffered a TBI should consult their doctor.
