Prescription Drugs Linked to Life Threatening Skin Condition
Stevens-Johnson syndrome is a rare and potentially life threatening condition that causes a blistering of skin’s mucous membranes, usually around the eyes and mouth. It is estimated that 300 people in the United States contract Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (a related condition which results in a "peeling"of the entire top layer of the skin’s epidermis) each year. Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis are known to be caused by some viral infections and cancers However research also points to a link between some over the counter and prescription drugs. These include, sulfonamides, penicillins antibiotics, barbiturates sedatives and some anticonvulsants. Statistically these conditions are more prevalent in adults – perhaps as a result of taking more medication.
